What is a Food Rescuer?

Loaves & Fishes depends on our Food Rescuers to pick up and deliver food that would otherwise be wasted.  Food rescuers are assigned a food donor, such as a grocery store, and a delivery site which is one of our participating agencies. The rescuer picks up from the designated site and distributes the food to one of our agencies.

There may be mulitiple stops along the route. It is so easy to volunteer.  Our Operations Coordinator emails all the open routes available weekly.  Rescuers select which routes they are interested in and then they are assigned that route.  It's that simple.  Routes take about 1 hour to 1 hour and 1/2 to complete.

Most food rescue routes are run in the morning hours between 8:30am and 10:30am; however, routes are available other times as well.

Loaves & Fishes Food Rescuers must --

  • Are at least 18 years of age
  • Have a valid South Carolina driver's license
  • Maintain and have proof of vehicle insurance
  • Operate their own vehicle and pay for their own gas
  • Report the poundage and food type for each assigned route

There are several reporting methods available; however, the preferred method is through our Internet reporting system.
