From rescuing and delivering non-perishable food items to offering a hand at one of our fun annual events, volunteers help Loaves & Fishes reach and exceed our goals. Volunteers actually assisted Loaves & Fishes’ in keeping administrative costs low by logging over 10,130 volunteer hours in 2014! Rescue Routes

Volunteers rescue food that would be otherwise wasted by picking it up from a designated donor site and delivering it to one of Loaves & Fishes’ partner agencies. Rescue routes take approximately 1 – 1 1/2 hours to complete. There is a lot of flexibility with a rescue route. Choose either a regular weekly route, or run a route when you can.

Loaves & Fishes sends a weekly e-blast notification of available routes and you can choose which one you can commit to completing.

Rescue routes are primarily run in the mornings, 7 days a week, 364 days a year.

Requirements to be a rescue route driver include: a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance, and attend an orientation. Upon taking a route, volunteers are required to report donation poundage information through our online reporting system.

All rescue route volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.

Event Committees

Our event committees work with the Development Coordinator to sell tickets and sponsorships, develop and execute public relations plans, and implement logistics of the event. Volunteers work with staff to raise funds that assist with operational expenses of the organization. Contact Tessa May to express interest.


A much anticipated annual benefit concert, Rock Out Hunger is a chance to have a rockin’ good time while raising much needed funds and awareness about hunger in our community. There are several committees on which volunteers can serve including:

  • Sponsorship development and ticket sales
  • Printing and poster distribution
  • Public relations and marketing
  • Empty Bowls silent auction
  • Entertainment
  • Beverages
  • Volunteer recruitment and management


Taste of the Upstate is a premier food event featuring “tastes” from many of Greenville’s most celebrated restaurants. The event is held in late May/early June at the Embassy Suites in Greenville and includes live and silent auctions as well as musical entertainment and dancing. There are several committees which meet monthly during the height of the planning season. They are as follows:

  • Sponsorship development and ticket sales
  • Decorations and theme development
  • Public relations and marketing
  • Entertainment
  • Restaurant recruitment
  • Silent/live auction
  • Beverages
  • Volunteer recruitment and management

The night of the event, volunteers are needed in one of the following areas:

  • Registration
  • Check in / check out
  • Auction table host
  • Sponsor area host
  • Food judging assistant
  • Runner
  • Set up and clean up
Office Assistant

Volunteer office assistants work in the Loaves & Fishes offices on Woods Lake Road and aid the staff members as needed. In this capacity, computer skills are required as well as a high level of confidentiality. Volunteers work using web-based applications and Microsoft Office Suite. Office assistants can make their own schedule!  We can use help any day of the week during regular office hours.

This annual event takes place the week before Thanksgiving. Volunteers are needed to assist in the following ways:

  • Coordinate a food drive of boxed mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce , green beans, corn or other canned items
  • Host a Turkey Drive
  • Pick up food on Wednesday evening (day before Thanksgiving) and deliver it to several identified sites
  • Assist with turkey distribution at Loaves & Fishes’ offices during the weekend preceding Thanksgiving
  • Assist with sorting and boxing canned goods during the days leading up to the holiday; hours will vary
