Loaves & Fishes was founded in Greenville, South Carolina in 1991 by local
banker Sam Hunt who read a story in The New York Times about City Harvest, the
food rescue program in New York City. Recognizing that there was a lot of food
being thrown away in Greenville too, Mr. Hunt contacted some people he felt might
be interested in starting such an organization.
In the first year, Loaves & Fishes rescued 25,000 pounds of food. Since
that time, Loaves & Fishes has grown to rescue about 750,000 pounds of perishable
food each year.
With a staff of four, including two drivers who operate refrigerated box trucks,
and with the able assistance of about 60 regular volunteers, Loaves & Fishes
delivers food to more than 100 local human services agencies including 29 emergency
food pantries, 7 single meal feeders (soup kitchens and breakfast programs) and
14 shelters, group homes and residential programs. Loaves & Fishes also delivers
to community centers, nonprofit day care and after school programs, senior programs,
senior and disabled housing centers, and support groups addressing a wide variety
of issues. |
