Who does Loaves & Fishes help? It may not be who you think.
Loaves & Fishes, a nonprofit organization, provides perishable food to approximately
100 human services agencies and programs that feed the hungry in Greenville County, SC 364 days each year.
Who is hungry? The face of hunger is not what we expect. Most often it is children and seniors
and the working poor. For most of those receiving food from local agencies, one
medical bill or car repair can be all it takes to put them behind.
Sylvia & Melinda
Sylvia and her daughter 5 year old Melinda struggle every month even though Sylvia
works at a diner and the family receives food stamps. Melinda eats breakfast and
lunch at school and gets a snack at her afterschool program. School vacations
and summers present a big problem. Sylvia picks up food from church pantries and
at the end of the month Sylvia and Melinda go to the soup kitchen on the weekend
to get a meal.
Helen
Helen lives in the house she shared for almost 50 years with her late husband.
Helen doesn’t drive, but has a neighbor who takes her to a nearby food pantry
a couple of times a month. Helen didn’t work and receives only Supplemental Social
Security and about $10 a month in food stamps. Helen’s medical costs make it difficult
to pay her taxes on the house and the utilities as well as cover her medicines
and food too.
Joe
Joe worked steadily as a carpenter until he got hurt on the job. He was out of
work so long that he lost his apartment and is living in his car. Without any
training other than carpentry, Joe is trying to get well enough to go back to
work, but the process has been slow. He eats at the soup kitchen as often as he
can in order to get one good hot meal each day.
